The Therapeutic Massage curriculum prepares graduates to work in direct client care settings providing manipulation / massage of the soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress, and to promote health and wellness.
Courses include content in normal human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic massage, ethical /legal issues, business practices, and psychology. Students should be able to perform entry level therapeutic massage with various populations throughout the lifespan.
Employment opportunities include health care facilities, chiropractors’ offices, spas /health/sports clubs, and private practice. Graduates may be eligible to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam.
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:
- Describe the physiological and emotional benefits of massage therapy.
- Execute an effective treatment plan based on knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and common pathologies as well as assessment of client information.
- Perform massage therapy for therapeutic benefit through application of techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration while utilizing the hands, fingers, thumbs, elbows, and forearms and/or feet as appropriate.
- Develop successful and ethical client-therapist relationships.
- Demonstrate appreciation for the legal, ethical, and professional parameters essential to the profession of massage therapy.
- Develop employment strategies and/or a business plan that reflect(s) understanding of business practices, legal issues, and federal, state, and local regulations related to the practice of massage therapy.
Applicants for admission to the Therapeutic Massage program must have graduated from high school or have an Adult High School Diploma or have passed the High School Equivalency with an equivalency certification which meets minimum requirements set by the State of North Carolina. Official high school transcript and copy of AHS Diploma/High School Equivalency Certificate and official college transcripts, where applicable, must be on file in the Admissions Office. Students must be at least 18 years old by the first day of MTH 110.
A student must earn a grade of “C” or better in all MTH prefix courses in order to progress in the program.
Criminal Background Check
The North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy may deny a license to practice massage and bodywork therapy if an applicant has a criminal record or there is other evidence that indicates the applicant lacks good moral character.
In addition to Davidson-Davie requirements and course objectives, there are professional standards that encompass communication, motor skills, sensory and cognitive ability and professional conduct that are essential for the competent study and practice of therapeutic massage. The decision regarding transfer credit for therapeutic massage courses is made by the Director of the program in consultation with members of the faculty and the appropriate academic administrator. Syllabi for courses for which credit is requested will be required. Transfer credit must be evaluated by the program and is not guaranteed.
